Richard is a sculptor of spatial and material presence. He investigates the
power of simple forms. When placed in proximity, these forms create
synergy with each other and the world around them. His expansive
installations use Minimalist vocabulary to convey an inevitable
complexity, an ambiguous complexity that speaks to the world he lives
in. A social anthropologist for ten years, he became interested in the
sculpture of the first generation of Minimalist artists. Nonas was
fascinated and concerned by the emotional limitations of their aims.
This began a 35 year exploration of the possibility of creating
sculpture using the language of abstraction to convey the layered
complexities of life itself.
